lead lead between 15 or 20 ft. wide. I give Ada my sox to
darn, she unraveled one.

- Calm Midnite, current E pretty strong. Quite few floes
& cakes float by. Can hear surf to S.W. High tide about
5 A.M. After sun up water start freeze, by noon 1/3 inch
(estimated). C takes walk to E, gone when I get up. K is
digging several holes back of storm tent, nobody knows
why. Probably to bury some records, not at all unlikely
because they seem rather prolific in building of monuments
& leaving of records. C comes back, went trapping camp,
does not say why. Says ice off T.C. is solid. Holes K
dug are for cache (guess on my part, must be mistaken
about first guess). 6:30 K sees bear on beach to W.
K, M & I go after him, as leave camp C comes in. 3 of us
go as far as harbor but do not see bear nor tracks. Come
back 8. Airs from E. 12 Midnite airs change to breeze,
sleet bit before 1:30.

- 3 A.M. breeze to light gale. Continue all day due E.
(slightly on shore here). Saw last of boat load wood
today, load will not last more 10 days. Sleets some dur-
ing day, melts soon hit ground. Wind not moved ice tho
closed lead. Cannot see if ice is moving far offshore (2
miles or over). Few small cakes are breaking off, floes
drifting ashore. 7:30 start snowing steady past 12 with wind.

- 6:30 A.M. still snowing, drifts several feet deep. Wind
light gale, subsided once or twice but made up between
times. Noon stopped snowing, wind same shifted few degrees
N. All stay in, nothing done.

- 6 A.M. wind same, let up noon calm. 6:30 P.M. fog came
on, start sleeting 8 P.M. same 23 Midnite (lite airs).
C took out thwarts from dory. Still no word about
moving. Expect within next two days to called some
morning with: "Get the hell up, we are going to move
to-day." (Will note then). As said, nothing mentioned
about move or when or how, or anything concerning construc-
tion of camp. Of course plans are made & movements &
actions should go monotonously, but will they? We shall
see. Wonder if traps will be taken? They should. Am
of opinion that only one trip will be made & with dory.
Unexplainable reason. Am dubious concerning camp sites.
If mysterious dash is made (this is through unsophisticated
phrases dropped by K, M & C) by K & C to civilization,
nothing more than justice to me, concerning camp & equip-
ment. (Do not mean I should be consulted.)

- 4:30 A.M. strong breeze, subsided 10, perfect calm 12.
1/2 inch ice and snow not thawed, cloudy all day, 11 P.M.
clear, 12 P.M. cloud, light breeze N.N.W. just strong
enough to move young ice offshore.
