Miss Helen Lomen,
Seattle, Wash.
Spring Apts.

Dear Helen.;

I am writing you hastily so as to get it in the mail for the
first train north and will not be able to say all I want to say.

Mr. Stefansson has sent me your letter to forward as he has
mislaid your address,if he had it, and he has sent me a copy of
it and I note therein that he suggest that you see helen Ada, and make
some arrangements with her for having her story written.

I have learned a good deal about the Eskimo disposition and
about Ada in particular and I am going to tell you frankly ah
what it is in particular.

She appreciates you and Carl and is very grateful to you for
the things you have done for her but, when talking about you and
others, she used this language. " I dont care for Helen " and you
know that we were unable to get any more out of her but, I am of
the opinion that she dont care for me because where, if that is true,
a white person would have said so or lied about it, she said nothing
and I just think that she likes Mrs.Knight much better than she
does me.

I am telling you that because I am in doubt as to the wisdom
of your undertaking to get anywhere with her and the negotiations.

She admits that Noice has treated her very badly and that her
sisters are very bitter toward him for it all and I tried to get
her to give an assignment of her diary to Mr .Stefansson so that
he could get it now that Noice has finished with it but, she would
admit all about him but she was loyal for she felt that he had
saved her life and had brought her from the island to her Mother
and Bennett and she would not go back on him.

I am sending a copy of this letter to Mr .Stefansson and he may
have some one else in mind who can approach her on the subject.

She says that, the reason she would not autograph the picture
you had and wanted her to sign, was that she did not give it to
you. She brought this subject up herself.

Please use your own judgment about this matter and dont
understand me as advising against your seeing her but, she resents
all efforts to assist her because she says she has money of her
own and knows how to use it.

Hastily with Kindest ragr regards to your Mother.

JIK.

[note in left margin] I would be glad if you would go to see her and see what
she has to say of her visit over here and let me know

[note in right margin] Mr. Stefansson, I believe a letter written to her by you, such
as you wrote to Helen might do more good, and ask her to see some one
who would help her at h[...][ccest]. K
