TO SUBJECT: FROM
Memo for Mr. Taylor STEFANSSON ACCOUNT TORONTO
.
Attached is clipping from the Globe today.

I do not know how many statements the Govern-
ment want. They have already received two
covering the advance of $3000. made by them.
There is nothing, however, we can do until
their communication is forwarded from Vancouver.

ACCOUNTING IS ASKED
OF STEFANSSON FUND

Ottawa, .—An advance of
$3,000 was made by the Dominion
Government to Vilhjalmur Stefans-
son
in connection with the relief of
the Crawford party on Wrangle Is-
land
, according to the report of the
Auditor-General for 1922-23, tabled
in the House of Commons today.

On November 9 last the Acting
Auditor-General wrote to the De-
partment of the Interior
for an ex-
planation of the payment and for an
accounting of the expenditure. On
the 19th of the same month the
Deputy Minister of the Department
replied that, as Mr. Stefansson was
absent in England, he had asked the
Stefansson Arctic Exploration and
Development Company
of Vancou-
ver
for an account of the expendi-
tures.

The correspondence ends at this
point.

Stefansson May Arrange
Arctic Lease to Oil Men

INDEPENDENCE, Kas., .—Negotiations for leasing five
million acres of land, which may contain oil, in the Arctic, southwest
of Herschel Island, are under way between Charles Roth, wealthy oil
man of this city, and Vilhjalmur Stefansson, noted explorer. Stefansson
will shortly make another trip to the Arctic regions to arrange for the
lease, according to reports here.

Drilling equipment for a dozen or more wells will be sent north
this summer, probably in July, and landed on Herschel Island. The
material will have to be transported to the area by reindeer. Eskimos
will have charge of the work.
