V.S. V1
when you come but, she may be not be content to stay so long
and, it is likely that a week may be her limit. If you could find
her here it would be better for all concerned. I asked her if
she liked you and she said she thought so but she had hever seen
you.
I note what you say of the financial basis of the boys and I
am confident that you will make the honorable settlement whatever
it may seem to be.
Mrs. Knight has acquired an idea lately that she will never be
satisfied until she shall be able to go to Wrangle Island and, I have
thought that, if we could raise a fund for the memorial sufficient
to secure it and to enable Mrs.Knight and myself to go and place
it, what w a wonderful thing it would be for her.
I have suggested to the other famileies, the designation of a
day which shall be, as long as we shall live, a memorial day for
all the families and on which day, all shall take the time to write
letters to all the other families in commemoration of our boys.
Mrs. Galle had has asked that I do not designate the 28 th day of
January as this day because it is the birth day of her husband and
daughter. This should be cheerfully respected.
I see by Maurer's letter that, he says, Jany 28, they will
" leave today " and, it seems to me most likely that they could
not have survived a couple of days so, what would you think of
Jany. 30 th. ? I shall be glad to hear from you with an sug-
gestion on this subject.
Carl Lomen promised me that he would write personal letters
to all the families and I gave him their addresses. He says he
hopes to see you soon as he will soon be in N.Y.
I am happy to note that Mrs. Knight is growing stronger in her
fight but, she has days when she does nothing but weep no, I shall
not say it that way, she weeps as she goes about her daily tasks.
Trusting that I may have encouraging word from you soon and
hoping that I have not overdone the matter of writing in this lette.
I am expecting that, when you come to Portland, as you will
have a vacant day, if they do not arrange for you to lecture here,
you will come out here and spend that vacant day. Mrs. Knight is
also expecting it. I shall try and go to Portland and bring you
out.
Yours very respectfully;
J I Knight
