Dear Stefansson:-
Some friend has sent the Crawfords a copy
of your London Times article of October 9th, and Mrs. Craw-
ford is very much upset over what you have said, and called
me up yesterday in a great state of perturbation. The
article, by the way, has not been given by me to any Can-
adian papers.
Mrs. Crawford called me again this morning
to say that the article was full of mis-statements. For
instance - you say that game was plentiful, Allan says it
was scarce, and so on. She declared that she was going to
answer this article, but had not yet decided on the method,
but it would probably be through the daily papers.
I did the best I could to point out to her
the article was written with the best of intentions and
based upon the information you had at that time, later in-
formation may have modified some of your statements, and
that Mrs. Crawford must keep in mind that in October all
you had was what had appeared in the English papers as a
result of Noice's telegrams.
The plain fact is, Mrs. Crawford is in a
very nervous condition. I feel intensely sorry for her,
and I know you are, and in order to prevent her, if possible,
from doing anything rash such as rushing into print - which
I am sure the Telegram and Globe would be glad to have her
do - I called this morning upon Mr. Spence who is Counsel
for the C.P.R. here, an excellent man, an old friend of
the Crawfords, as well as being a very old friend of one
of my best friends in Vancouver. I talked the whole thing
over with Mr. Spance, and he will do what he can to see
that Mrs. Crawford does not write letters to the paper, at
lease before she has written to you and given you an oppor-
tunity of stating her side of the case.
