Dear Mr. Stefansson:
Just the morning after I had cabled you, I received
your cable which answered all my inquiries. I was so sorry, then,
that I had bothered you, for it must have seemed as though I am
very impatient. As a matter of fact, I got somewhat stampeded on
money matters, and as I was cabling you anyway I included the other
inquires at the same time.
Right
As to the money: I had been hoarding it as much as
possible, paying only bills that simply had to be paid, and had
about $52. left. Thursday morning Mr. LeBourdais came in in great
distress. It seems that although he has placed a number of articles
with magazines this summer, almost none of them have paid him for
them. He has tried to hurry them up but to no avail. When he
finally came to me he owed for a month's rent and the people from
whom he rented the apartment were threatening to evict him. The
rent was $65. I didn't have that but I did give him the $50. that
I had. That left me without anything and with some rather urgent
bills that needed to be paid.

I have been wondering what to do about paying
Mrs.Miller for the rent of the cottage. I think you told me that
Mrs. de Waal was going to pay $100. or $125. toward it. I have
decided to wait until I go there and see if she has this. If she
gives it to me I think I might put $100. of the $500. you are send-
ing, with it and send to Mrs. Miller, telling her that you have been
detained in England and that I will send her the balance on your
return. That is, I'll do this unless I find I have to use the money
for something else first. There are a good many big bills outstanding
but I have been putting them aside and can probably continue to do so
until you get back.

However, along with my financial report I have some
good news as well as bad. The royalty statement from Macmillan's
has just come in. According to it there is due you $2,495.27, after That's good, don't you think?
deducting books you have purchased, etc. This is not payable to you
until November 27, 1923 - they send the statement now and the check
in November.
About the Science reprints of the Jenness controversy:
I think you have their letter telling what the cost of the reprints
would be - I believe it was to be about $700 with covers and about
$500. without. At the time I wrote them to send me the paged reprints
