,
Dear Sir,
On the 19th December last the Commissioner
drew your attention to the newspaper reports of the relief
expedition of August and September 1922 to Wrangel Island,
for which the Government advanced the Stefansson Arctic
Exploration and Development Company the sum of three thousand
dollars.
In your letter of the 27th December, which
you stated was a preliminary answer, you expected to let the
Department know the result of the expedition either from the
Secretary of the Company, or you would furnish the information
yourself. From press reports we understand that Captain Joseph
Bernard left Chicago for New York some time ago, and we presume
that his visit there was in response to your invitation.
As the fiscal year closes on the 31st March
next I would be glad to have a statement from you as to the
success or failure of the relief expedition, and if possible,
an accounting for the sum of three thousand dollars which was
sent to your Vancouver office on the 22nd August, 1922.
Yours very truly,
O. S. Finnie
