Dear Mr. Maurer:
The package containing the four installments of your
story of the "Karluk" and the adventures which followed was too
large to be put in my letter box at the Club and was, consequently,
put in the check room. There it lay forgotten for I don’t know
how long and I have just received it. I read the story over last
night with great interest.
I have forgotten whether you said this was the only copy
you had. If you have another copy I should like very much to keep
this one.
I presume that the photographs marked "Peck’s Studio”
are ones of which you have the negatives and that I may, therefore,
keep them. The others I shall return.
One of your photographs is marked "Templemen and Maurer
hoisting the Canadian flag at Rogers Harbor, , Dom-
inion Day." Hadley told me about a ceremony you had on Wrangel
Island by which you took possession of the island for the Canadian
Government. Was the hoisting of the flag shown in this photograph
the occasion when possession was taken? I had understood from
Hadley that, the ceremony took place at Waring Point.
Please write me briefly describing this ceremony of tak-
ing possession, saying whether it was at Waring Point or Rogers
Harbor, and whether you took part in it.
I am enclosing a separate letter regarding: the vegetation
and natural conditions of Wrangel Island.
Please let me know how much it cost to get the prints
made that you sent me. Also, if you can, let me have half a dozen
copies of the photograph showing the hoisting of the Canadian flag
on Dominion Day. I want to send these to certain officers of the
Canadian Government.
