--158--

they are so bold that they approach the settlements from be-
hind the fences and carry off the sheep in the presence of
watchmen. During our voyage for surveying the northern bay,
we had occasion to verify their boldness. They came so close
to our tents, despite the fires generally started in a few
places, that the howling raised by them gave us no peace,
nor could we get rid of these uninvited guests other than by
firing a few shots in the direction from which their howls
were coming.

Besides these ferocious animals, deer live in large herds,
and rabbits, martens, anteaters, and others in low-lying woods
and on hills.

We saw and had occasion to shoot some birds: eagles of
various size and species--most frequently is encountered the
white-headed, enormous eagle, living on the high coastal
rocks, and vultures with a bare neck, which is not smaller
than the vulture itself. After it in size comes the long-eared
owl and a multitude of others, large and small hawks and owls.

Besides these birds, partly living here permanently,
partly migratory, there are cranes, storks, traffs [?], and an
innumerable quantity of small birds, pretty for the most part,
of which are distinguished a beautiful humming bird and wood-
cocks. Finally, only in California lives the kadarnist [the California quail]
bird in size and taste similar to our partridge, very pretty;
its back and wings are brown, the breast and stomach, gray;
their every feather is bordered with a narrow black line.
