Aberdeen 6th of April 1876

His Excellency Jno. M. Stone

Dear Sir

Mr. James M Smalds [unclear] will be presented to you for appointment of circuit judge of his district- I have known Mr. Smald for many years - he is laborious able and learned in his profession and in my judgment has all the qualifications required to make him an efficient and useful judge-

Nothing would afford me more pleasure then to see him appointed to the position. It is true I do not reside in his district, but I maybe allowed to [unclear] my [unclear] many to his merits.
