His Excellency, Charles Clarke,
Gov: of Mississippi.
Sir.
Having served three years as Surgeon in the Confederate Army, I resigned a few months ago on account of the desperate health of my Wife, and am now liable under the present call for State troops.
I would respectfully beg leave to suggest that my Services might be much more valuable as a Surgeon than as a private bearing arms; and if you concur with me in this opinion, I would gladly accept at your hand an appointment as Surgeon in the State Service, which I would be pleased to recieve at your earliest convenience.
I am, Sir, Very Respectfully
