Carthage July 23d 1866

To His Excelincy B. G. Humphries

Sir

I address a few lines to you. Some four weeks Since in relation to the destitute families in the County of Leake from which I have not herd Since I am very anxious to hear from you on the Sub-ject hence I take the liberty of again Calling your attention to that Subject— Their is in this County a great many families who are in a verry destitute Condition I Refer to those who lost their husbands Sons & Brothers in the war it is Treeting the dead with great Injustice after they have gone forth at their Country's Case and poured out their lifes Blood in the defense of their Country for their wives and Children to Starve the people have Contributed to their necesities and Kept them up So far but their means have become Short the Crops also are Short & they begin to think that Charity begins at home A Gentleman from Jackson Informed us that you told him that you had Sent or mailed me $200, for the Relief of the destitute of this County I have Received no funds from that Quarter Sir I Know that you are a

man posessed of all the felings that it takes to Constitute a Gentalman Concequent-ly I Shall make no attempt to Raise your Sympathy on this Subject Knowing that if their is any posible aid to be Recevd from the State of Miss you will order it Sent forward at once Sir
