The President stated that there was due to Mr. Mohns $20.00 for planting trees and irrigating same. On motion an order was drawn on the Treasurer for $10.00 to pay on account to Mr. Mohns.

The Cemetery Committee was instructed to carry out the instructions from the board in relation to the plat [Note] of Mr. Poska to which he is not entitled, to remove the curbing or pay $100.00 for the plat.

The Secretary was instructed to communicate again with Mrs. Marks in San Francisco in relation to the grave adjoining her husband. Also to communicate with Mr. Louis Phillips about the grave next to Miss Stella Phillips if she would not transfer it to the congregation.

Communication from the Director of the Jewish Chautauqua Society, Philadelphia, asking for contributing or subscription membership was read, ordered received and placed on file.

The following bills were read and ordered paid C. Suter for flag pole 20.00 Locke & Laverson Flag 10.00 J.W. Wilson 4 carriages for Dennery & S.S. Nathan 14.00 Cap Gas Co. Gas & Incandescent Lights 3.80 W.J. Thompson setting up & taking down [?stove ] 2.00 Christianson & Co. broom .70 N. Mohns on acct. 10.00 Total $60.50

][Note: In current U.S. usage, a "plat" is a map of a piece of land, but in British usage, and evidently in the era these Minutes were taken in the U.S., a "plat" can/could also be the same thing as a "plot," a small piece of land such as a cemetery plot. Salomon usually used the term "plat," though once in a while he wrote "plot." We have transcribed whichever he wrote, though at times it is difficult to decipher one from the other.]

Sacramento May 25th, 1898

The board of officers of the Congregation B'nai Israel met at the synagogue at 8 o'clock P.M. Mr. Albert Elkus, president, presiding. Roll call the following were noted absent. Treasurer Emil Steinman, Trustee, A. Bonheim & school director J. Anchell.

Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. The resignation of Morris L. Levy was read and accepted.

Mr. Leon Cahen having returned from Europe asked to have his name again placed on the roll of membership and on motion it was so ordered.

Communication from the Director of the Jewish Chautauqua Society asking this congregation to become contributing or subscribing member was read and on motion ordered on file.

The building comittee reported that they have awarded the contract for painting of the synagogue to Sullivan Kelly Co. [Note] for $50.00 and for wiring the building, they have received bids from 25.00 to 60.00. On motion it was ordered that the $25.00 bid be accepted.

The trustees reported that they have had placed the pole & flag on top of the building.

The cemetery committee was authorized to have the house in the grounds removed to sell it for whatever they can get for it. And to improve the grounds at an expense not exceeding $50.00, the first money to come in from the sale of plots.

The president stated that there was $25.00 due to Mr. Mohns for planting trees, irrigating, etc.

On motion it was ordered that an order be drawn on the Treasurer in favor of Mr. Mohns for $10.00 on account.

The Cemetery Committee was instructed to carry out the intentions of the Board in relation to the plot of Mr. Poska, to have him to remove the curbing or have the same done.

The secretary was instructed to again communicate with Mrs. Marks in San Francisco in relation to the plot alongside of Mr. Marks. Also to communicate with Mr. Louis Phillips that if they do not wish to make use of it to give it to the congregation.

The following Bills were read and ordered paid C. Suter Flag Pole 20.00 [Note] Locke & Lavenson Flag 10.00 J.W. Wilson & son Carriages for funerals of A. Dennery and S.S. Nathan 14.00 Christianson & Co. brooms .70 W. J. Thompson setting up and taking down stove 2.00 Cap. Gas Co. for light 3.80

Sacramento July 31, 1898

The Board of Officers met at 8 P.M. Mr. Albert Elkus, President, presiding. Roll call: H. Weinstock, Sam Lavenson, and J. Thieben absent.

Minutes of last meeting read and approved. Mr. M.S. Jaffee applied to become a member of the congregation and on motion the application was received and Mr. Jeffery elected a member. The resignations of Messrs. I. Lewis and Theo. Gosliner were accepted.

Committee on wiring the building reported that they have overlooked 2 lights at an expense of 3.00 and asked that the amount be paid, which was so ordered, a warrant drawn on Treasurer for 30.50, 25.00 for firm contract and 2.50 for globes and 3.00 extra lights.

The following report from the chairman of the cemetery committee was read:

Sacramento, July 31, 1898

To the officers of Congregation B'nai Israel

Gentlemen, It is with pleasure that I can report to you a donation of $78.55 from the Ladies Auxilliary Society to be applied for necessary repairs in the cemetery. I can also report to you that the old building in the cemetery has been sold for $5.00 making a total of $83.55 of which $14.25 has been paid and to Mr. Mohns $4.00 for extra work leaving a balance of 65.30 for future repairs. With the consent of the Board I would respectfully ask that all of the above balance shall be kept as a special fund to apply only for the purpose so kindly donated by the Ladies Auxilliary Society.
