12 p.m. Left Berkeley on the 22nd, San Diego
on the 23rd, and spent the night of the 23rd about
17 miles below Tijuana in the sand dunes close to
the surf. Yesterday, nooned at Ensenada, and made
camp for the night at (near) Vicente. Saw much
of interest all along -- good places for trapping, several
"associations" that ought to be worked -- but our business
was to come thru, and this meant with our huge
load, Chester Lamb and myself with full outfit for
two months, long hours of travelling. Reached
"Johnson's" ( Rancho San Antonio) at 8 this morning,
and 15 miles south of there entered MVZ's
San Pedro Martir "Sectina"[?] -- just south of Cape
Colnett. Entering the broad Colnett valley, we spent
a few minutes at "Colnett Village" -- not a trace of any
buildings, only a scow and some skiffs back of the
barrier beach. The beach is steep, of large pebbles,
but the tide was out, uncovering a narrow margin
of sand at the surf line, and here were a
lot of waders.
The low mesas on either side of Colnett Valley
are covered with the conspicuous Agave associates,
the north of the valley , pickleweed and salt grass
and vast areas of tall, blooming composites; no
sloughs, no fresh water at all for miles.
Took pencil census from 8:50 - 10:30 along route
south from Colnett Valley and beach, across
San Telmo Valley, and along road toward
