Sgt. Leslie Brooks

Leslie Brooks (1891-1986) entered the Army Air Service in August 1917 and was assigned to the 83rd Aero Squadron (later designated the 495th Aero Squadron) stationed at Kelly Field, Texas, where he worked as a mechanic and helped build engines for "flying machines". In February 1918 the Squadron shipped overseas to France where Brooks continued to work as a mechanic and truck driver and was promoted to sergeant. He was discharged in March of 1919.

Dear Lydia,

Your letters of Aug-31st and Sept - 1st at hand just received them and was glad to hear from you and to hear that you are all well as I am well and having a good time.

I am glad to hear that Esther Torrello was up to see you and the folks what does she say about Billy going in the Army does she like it or not.

I have not been able to locate Dan or Leslie Tracy yet as I have not been able to locate what Squadron Leslie Tracy is in but will find him

in a day or so as I am going over to the old Barriks to find out if he is there or has been sent to some other Port.

And about Dan he is in the Quartermaster Department at Fort Sam Houston I am going over there to see him tomorrow or the next day that friend of mine by the name of Grady is in the 86th Prov Aero Squadron there are only 150 men in a Squadron they made three Squadrons of the train we went down on us three Boys were lucky in getting together but we might get transfered to another

Squadron where we can better our selfs if we can get ahead quicker we are not going to hang back as it does not pay in the Army. I am out for all the money I can make do you not think it is the best policy and I am going to behave myself as long as I am in the Army that is the only way to get ahead in the Army there are lots of good jobs here for a man that tends to his own businnes and that is what I am going to do.

overhaul a Touring Car for one of our Sargents in a day or so it is not here yet but will be in a day or so that will give them a chance to see what I can do and will give me a chance to get ahead quicker so that is not so bad that suits me fine.

I also received Stan's letter and was glad to hear from him. Tell him I will write to him in the morning as I am going to town this afternoon and expect to go over to Ft Sam Houston to see Dan Mrs Webbers Brother if I get to town early enough.
