Sgt. Leslie Brooks

Leslie Brooks (1891-1986) entered the Army Air Service in August 1917 and was assigned to the 83rd Aero Squadron (later designated the 495th Aero Squadron) stationed at Kelly Field, Texas, where he worked as a mechanic and helped build engines for "flying machines". In February 1918 the Squadron shipped overseas to France where Brooks continued to work as a mechanic and truck driver and was promoted to sergeant. He was discharged in March of 1919.

Hello Sis, How are you and all the folks. I am dropping you a line to let you know we are having a little rain storm and a little thunder & Lightning with it it is a great country down here.

I will send you some Pictures of our Barricks and camp as soon as Taid sends me a camera so I can take some Pictures also I will send you some Pictures of the Flying machines we have down here.

They have a great number of Flying machines down here.

I will send you a little present as soon as I get a chance to go to San Antonio.

Sis write me a postal card every other day or so so I get some mail and news so I know what is going on at home and in the city.

As soon as I go to town I will get some pretty Post Cards and send them to you so you can see what kind of a Town San Antonio is.

I am having a fine time down here all we have to do is to eat sleep & drink lots of good well water.

I forgot to tell you we also have cyclones down here we had one down here to day they are only small ones down in this section. in some parts of Texas they have big ones but I should worry.

There are lots of Boys here from New York I am going to go down to their camp and see if I can see George Sandruski Mrs Finzies Brother.

I have met a lot of Boys from San Francisco down here.

So I have lots of company down here so I do not get lonesome.

Tell mama I will drop her a line to morrow I wrote her a letter this morning to tell her I am expecting to take a job cooking.

Write me lots of letters so I know what is going on in that part of the Country. I think I will have some good news for you and the rest of the folks in a day or so.

I will close now as I am going to eat supper now.

Dear Theo, I am dropping you a line to let you I recieved your letter and was glad to hea from you as we do not get much news down here as to what is going on in San Francisco the papers we got down here have nothing to amount to anything in them.

I am glad to hear that you have Bullock to fight your case as I think he is the proper man for that sort of a buisness.

I am glad to hear that you gave Gertrude my address for August so I can expect a letter from him.
