baptised [baptized] in blood The enemy took
us to a disadvantage they having the
choice of ground and fiting [fighting] from
behind stone walls and bushes with
a squadron of cavelry [cavalry] drawn up to
dispute our passage by the road
whilst all along behind a stone wall
and on the upper hill side on the right
were posted carbineers [Carabiniers] who fired on
us as we approached or passed by
The first fire was on our advance
guard and twoo [two] were killed and
five or six wounded but one mortaly [mortally]
however. The rebs [rebels] also took twoo [two] prisoners
one lieutenant and one private. The
advance guard was then ordered to fall
back on the main column which was
stationed in town twoo [two] squadrons
were then deployed as skirmishers and
Co L was with them The advance was made
cautiously feeling its way for uintery [unitary]
but found the enemy had abandoned their
ground taking their own dead and wounded
