Stop 178 - SHIMOGA, MYSORE

1000 specimens

A one-night camp located in the
grounds of the circuit house, 1
mile N.W. of town. Dry grassy
fields, heavily grazed by cattle
and goats; scattered low bushes.
The countryside might be called
gently rolling, and is marked
by low hills around the
more flat valley in which
Shimoga is built. The [circuit
house?] is located on a gentle
rise overlooking a small lake
less than a quarter mile away
and a little stream running
closer to camp. Trees scarce.

The evening started off quite well;
small [aquatics?], etc. [swarmed?] in to
the black light from dusk
until about 8 o'clock. A sudden
stiff breeze blew up and
collecting dropped off. 75°F

1000 specimens.

The road to Tirthahalli parallels
the TUNGA RIVER, occasionally
cutting along the lower slopes
of the forested hills bordering
the river valley. The forest
type of the area could be termed
deciduous thorn perhaps, consisting
of medium-sized trees with
an understory of tangled thorny
bushes. The forest was quite
dry in February. These specimens
were collected primarily by
sweeping grass and herbs along
the shoreline of a manmade
lake behind a dam on the
Tunga. The store vegetation
