Anthony St. John was born at Nelson on the 31st December 1913, and received his secondary education at Nelson College, passing the University entrance examination. He afterwards studied medicine at Otago and Melbourne Universities for three years but terminated this in 1936. When applying for enlistment in aircrew, in May 1940, he was employed in a clerical capacity by the Internal Affairs Department at Wellington.
Flight Lieutenant St. John was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 24th November 1940 and posted to Harewood late in December for his elementary flying training. After completing this, he embarked for Canada by the "Awatea" on the 27th February 1941 to train under the Empire Air Training Scheme.
Shortly after arrival there, he proceeded to No. 6 Service Flying Training School, Dunnville, Ontario where he was awarded the flying badge and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer on the 10th June 1941. Later while serving in Canada, he was promoted to Flying Officer on the 7th January 1942 and to Flight Lieutenant on the 1st December 1942. Meantime on the 14th June 1941 he had proceeded to No. 1 "M" Depot, Debert, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.
Flight Lieutenant St. John arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth early in July and was posted to No. 2 Flying Training School, Cranwell, Lincolnshire, late the same month. He returned to Canada early in January 1942 and posting to No. 41 Service Flying Training School, Weybourne, Saskatchewan and served there as a staff pilot until proceeding to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Lachine, Canada on the 13th February 1944 for embarkation to the United Kingdom.
Flight Lieutenant St. John arrived at No. 12 R.N.Z.A.F. Personnel Despatch and Reception Centre, Brighton on the 25th February and remained there until posting on the 11th April to No. 20 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, Kidlington, Oxfordshire. Early in June he converted to Mosquito aircraft at No. 1655 Mosquito Training Unit,
