Edward Robinson was born at Whakatane on 31st March 1923. He received his secondary education at Rongotai College and afterwards by night classes at the Wellington Technical College. He played hockey and tennis at college and afterwards both these games for the Methodist Club. He was apprentices to Stevens Motors at Lower Hutt at the time of applying for enlistment in aircrew on the 5th December 1940.

Pilot Officer Robinson was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua on the 7th March 1942 and posted to New Plymouth on the 1st May for his elementary flying training. He embarked for Canada on 14th August for training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after arrival there, he was posted late in September to No. 12 Service Flying Training School, Brandon, Manitoba where he was awarded the flying badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant on the 22nd January 1943. Later while serving in the United Kingdom, he was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on 22nd July 1943 and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer on 15th May 1944. Meantime on the 22nd February 1943 he had proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Pilot Officer Robinson arrived at No. 12 R.N.Z.A.F. Personnel Despatch and Reception Centre, Brighton on 17th March and commenced his advanced and night flying late the following month at No. 6 Advanced Flying Unit, Little Rissington, Gloucestershire. After completing the course he was posted on the 29th June to No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Westcott, Buckinghamshire for crewing up and completion of his training as pilot of Wellington bomber aircraft. On 17th September he was posted to No. 1657 Conversion Unit, Stradishall, Suffolk and converted to Stirling four-engined aircraft, before joining No. 620 Squadron at Fairford, Gloucestershire on 3rd November for operational flying as Captain of Stirling bomber aircraft.
