he was stationed at No. 1657 Conversion Unit, Shepherd Grove, Suffolk, and at No. 1699 Conversion Unit, Oulton, Norfolk, for training on Stirling and Fortress aircraft. In November he joined No. 214 Squadron at Oulton, taking part, as bomb aimer on Fortress aircraft, in a number of raids on Germany. The targets included Karlsruhe, Mainz, Saarbrucken, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt.

On the night of February 9th, 1945, F/Sgt. Olds was air bomber on a Fortress aircraft which took off on a "Window" operation for the Western Ruhr and failed to return to its base. This was his 19th operational sortie. All the members of the crew including F/Sgt. Olds were reported missing. It was later officially presumed that he had lost his life.

In February, 1945 information received from Air Ministry, stated that the body of W/O J.P. Roberston, a New Zealander and member of the crew, had been washed ashore at Dungness, Kent.
