Later information was received from an official German source through the International Red Cross, that his body had been washed ashore and in consequence, he was reclassified to missing believed killed in action. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 25th October 1942.

Subsequently information through the same source disclosed that he was buried in the Cemetery at Grosstijk, Rotterdam, Holland.
