41995 Sergeant Reginald James NEWMAN.
Parents: Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Newman of WAITARA, TARANAKI.

Reginald Newman was born at New Plymouth on the 10th February 1919. He obtained his secondary education at the New Plymouth Boys' High School, reaching Senior Free Place standard. When applying for enlistment in aircrew, on the 22nd November 1939, he was employed in farming by his father at Tikorangi.

Sergeant Newman was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on the 8th February, 1941 and posted to New Plymouth on the 22nd March for his elementary flying training. He proceeded to No. 3 Service Flying Training School, Ohakea, on the 3rd May, where he was awarded the flying badge on the 14th June, and promoted to Sergeant on the 26th July. He embarked for the Far East on the 15th September.

Sergeant Newman arrived at Singapore late in October and was posted to No. 243 Squadron at Kallang, Singapore, for operational flying on Brewster Buffalo aircraft.

Sergeant Newman was the pilot of a Buffalo aircraft which was shot down in combat on the 12th January 1942, Sergeant Newman losing his life. He was buried in the Bidadari Christian Cemetery, Singapore.
