413271 Sergeant Douglas Gordon MARTYN.

Douglas Martyn was born at Thames, Auckland on December 25th, 1920, and received his secondary education at the Seddon Memorial Technical College, Auckland. He also took a Government Correspondence Course. His civilian occupation was that of farmer. On June 9th, 1939 he applied for enlistment in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a Flight Mechanic but owing to being engaged in an essential industry was not accepted for service. He applied for service in Air Crew on April 6th, 1940, and was accepted in the trade of Air Gunner. He was enlisted at Levin on June 8th, 1941. On July 22nd, he embarked for Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

On his arrival in Canada he proceeded to No. 1 Wireless School, Montreal, Quebec, on August 18th, and on March 1st, 1942, was posted to No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, McDonald, Manitoba, where he was awarded the Air Gunner's Badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant at the end of the month. He proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 10th, 1942, for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Sergeant Martyn arrived in England on May 15th. After a period spent at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth, he departed for New Zealand, arriving in the Dominion late in September. He was posted to Whenuapai on October 12th, being transferred a few days later to New Plymouth.

Sergeant Martyn was a member of the crew of an Oxford aircraft reported missing between New Plymouth and Kawhia on October 23rd, 1942. In spite of intensive search no trace of crew or aircraft was ever discovered and Sergeant Martyn was presumed to have lost his life on the above date.
