Alan Marshall was born in Auckland on January 1st, 1920 and received his secondary education at the Auckland Grammar School up to matriculation standard. He afterwards attened the Seddon Memorial Technical College in the evenings where he took Professional Accountancy and Secretarial Law.

His sports interests were cricket, swimming and tennis. At the time of his application for War Service in aircrew on June 1st 1940, he was employed as an accountant by Messrs. Spedding Limited, Auckland.

Pilot Officer Marshall was enlisted as Airman-Pilot under training at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on April 13th 1941. He was posted to Whenuapai for his elementary training on May 25th. Early in July he proceeded to No. 3 Flying Training School, Ohakea, where he converted to Oxford aircraft. He was awarded the Flying Badge on August 16th and was commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer on September 27th 1941.

Pilot Officer Marshall was the pilot of an Oxford aircraft which crashed at Motukara, Christchurch, on December 16th 1941, the occupant losing his life in the accident. He was buried in the Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland.
