Trevor Kemp was born at Pukekohe on the 12th November 1911. He received his education at Matamata Junior High School. His sports were golf, tennis, swimming, riding and fencing. He joined the Territorial Forces and served in the 6th Field Battery, N.Z. Artillery. His civilian occupation was that of a teller with the Bank of Australiasia, Christchurch. In March 1941 he applied for war service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Flight Sergeant Kemp was enlisted on the 27th March, 1942 at R.N.Z.A.F. station Rongotai, where he was employed on ground duties while awaiting training for aircrew. He was posted on the 28th April, 1942 to R.N.Z.A.F. station, Masterton and similarly employed there until on the 19th July, 1942 he was remustered to Pilot under Training and posted to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua. He was posted on the 5th September (redacted 1942) to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood for his elementary flying training. He proceeded on the 28th November (redacted 1942) to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram, where on the 13th February, 1943 he was awarded his Flying Badge. He was promoted to Sergeant on the 9th April, 1943 and to Flight Sergeant on the 9th (redacted April) October, 1943. Meanwhile, on the 24th April, 1943 he had embarked for the United Kingdom.

Flight Sergeant Kemp arrived at No. 12 Personnel Reception Centre, Brighton, on the 4th June 1943 and was posted on the 23rd June to No. 20 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, first at Weston-on-the-Green, and later at Kidlington, both in Oxfordshire. While here, his training was interrupted on the 27th July 1943 when he attended an instrument flying course with No. 1515 Beam Approach Training Flight, Swanton Morley, Norfolk. On the conclusion of this course he resumed his training with the Advanced Flying Unit, He proceeded on the 28th August, 1943 to No. 104 Operational Training Unit, Nutts Corner, Antrim, Northern Ireland, where he crewed-up and continued his training on Wellington bomber aircraft.
