Howard/Harold Kemp was born at Auckland on the 6th September 1921. He received his secondary education at Mt. Albert Grammar School and afterwards continued his studies by attending commercial classes at the Seddon Memorial Technical College. The sports in which he took part were tennis and soccer. His civilian occupation was that of a warehouseman in the employ of John Burns and Co., Ltd., Auckland and was so employed when in May, 1940 he applied for war service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Flying Officer Kemp was enlisted for aircrew training on the 2nd March, 1941 at the Ground Training School, Levin, and was posted on the 13th April, 1941 to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood, where he commenced his flying training. He proceeded on the 25th May, 1941 to No. 2 Service Flying Training School, Woodbourne, where, on the 5th July, 1941 he was awarded the Flying Badge. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on the 16th August, 1941 and to Flight Sergeant on the 1st July, 1942. His promotion to Warrant Officer wa made on the 1st July, 1943, and on the 22nd January, 1944 he was commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer. Meanwhile, on the 30th August, 1941, he had embarked for the United Kingdom.

Pilot Officer Kemp arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth, on the 19th October, 1941, and was posted on the 3rd November 1941 to No. 2 Service Flying Training School, Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, where he received his training in air navigation. During December he was attached to No. 1513 Beam Approach Training Flight, Honnington, Suffolk for an instrument flying course and on the conclusion of this course he returned to Brize Norton and resumed navigational training. He was posted on the 1st May, 1942 to No. 14 Advanced Flying Unit, Ossington, Northamptonshire and on the 17th June proceeded to No. 51 Operational Training Unit, Cranfield, Buckinghamshire, where he crewed up and completed his training on
