On the 25th March, 1944 Flight Lieutenant Keates was the pilot of a Catalina aircraft which took off from Sullom Voe on a test flight and crashed into a hillside in cloudy weather, all the members of the crew, including Flight Lieutenant Keates losing their lives. He was buried in the Dalston Road Cemetery, Carlisle.
