When ning to base at a height of 500 feet, all four engines of the aircraft out and the height being insufficient to enable them to be restarted. Aircraft had to be put down in the sea in a position of 37 miles west west of Tory Island, off the Donegal coast. Six members of the crew ght managed to leave the aircraft but owing to the very short time able it was not possible to inflate a dinghy until after the ditching occurred, and consequently two of them, including Pilot Officer James their lives through drowning. The bodies of these two men were not vered.
