Keith Hendry was born at Lyttleton on the 29th October 1916, and received his secondary education at the Christchurch Technical College. He played footbal for the Lyttleton Club, and took part in yachting with the Canterbury Yacht Club, being the winner of the Z class in the New Zealand Championship. At the time of applying for enlistment in Aircrew, on the 26th September, 1939, he was in the employ of H.A. Rhind & Co Ltd., of Lyttleton as a storeman.

Sergeant Hendry was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on the 24th November, 1940 and posted to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood, on the 20th January 1941 for his elementary flying training. This was terminated during February, when he was remustered to Air Observer, afterwards being reposted to the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 13th April. He embarked on the 18th June for Canada to train under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after arrival in Canada he was posted on the 5th July to No. 6 Air Observers School, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and then on the 28th September to No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, MacDonald, Manitoba. Here on the 8th November he wa awarded the Air Observer badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant, afterwards proceeding to No. 1 Air Navigation School, Rivers, Manitoba. On the 15th December he was awarded the Air Navigator's badge, and then posted to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Sergeant Hendry arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 30th January 1942, and remained there until posted on the 21st March to No. 2 (Observers) Advanced Flying Unit, Millom, Cumberland for his advanced navigational training. Late in April he proceeded to No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Bassingbourn, Hertfordshire, for crewing up and completion of his training.
