Sydney Hearn was born in London, England, on August 20th, 1895. His educational qualifications included Bachelor of Commerce degree and Accountancy examination. Prior to his enlistment in the Royal New Zealand Air Force on October 1st, 1939. Squadron Leader Hearn was employed as Company Manager, by Powers-Samas Accounting Machines Limited, Wellington.

Squadron Leader Hearn was appointed to Air Headquarters as Assistant to Director of Equipment and granted a temporary commission in the rank of Flying Officer (Honorary Flight Lieutenant) in October, 1939, was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in January 1st, 1940 and became a Squadron Leader on October 1st, 1940.

His tour of duty included Guadalcanal, Norfolk Island, Espiritu Santo, Suva, Tonga and Noumea. In June 1944 he was posted to No. 2 Port Depot, Sick and Wounded, Rongotai. He died of illness at the Station Hospital, Accommodation Camp, Wellington, on May 22nd 1945.

Squadron Leader Hearn was buried in the Soldiers Plot, Karori, Cemetery.
