RAAF 400027 Flight Lieutenant George HEADS.

George Heads was born at Middlemarch, Central Otago, on the 27th July, 1910, and received his secondary education at the Otago Boys' High School. He was interested in flying and gained his Pilot's "A" License in January, 1937 as a pupil of the Wellington Aero Club. Flight Lieutenant Head enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on the 29th April, 1940 at No. 1 Initial Training Wing, Somers, Victoria, and was posted late in May to No. 1 Wireless Air Gunnery School, Ballarat, for staff duties. On the 27th October, he proceeded to the Central Flying School, Camden, North South Wales qualifying there as a flying instructor and being awarded the flying badge before posting on the 27th January 1941 to No. 5 Elementary Flying Trainin School, Narromine, New South Wales. Here, on the 27th July, 1941, he was commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer, and further promoted to Flying Officer in January, 1942. He served as an instructor at No. 10 Elementary Flying Training School, Temora, and No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, at Sale, Victoria, reaching the rank of Flight Lieutenant on the 27th July, 1943, before proceeding on the 9th December 1943 to Air Gunnery School, West Sale. Late in January, 1944 he commenced operational training at No. 1 Operational Training Unit at the same Station, converting to Dakato transport aircraft before joining No. 33 Transport Squadron at Milne Bay, Pahua.

Flight Lieutenant Heads was the pilot of a Dakota aircraft which departed from Milne Bay on the 7th June, 1944, for Port Moresby, and failed to arrive at its destination. All the crew, including Flight Lieutenant Heads being classified as missing. Later his body was found and buried in the Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby, New Guinea.
