On the 16th July, 1941, Sgt. Dyer was wireless operator air gunner of a Wellington bomber aircraft which took off on an operational flight, and failed to return to its base. Sgt. Dyer was reported missing, and subsequently his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 17th July, 1941.
