On the night of the 18th August, 1942, P/O Alderton
was a member of the crew of a Wellington aircraft which took off
on an operational flight over enemy territory. The aircraft
failed to return to base, and all the members of the crew,
including P/O Alderton, were reported missing. Subsequently
his death was officially presumed. There were two other New
Zealanders in the crew, Sgt. H. J. Wakeman, of Christchurch, and
Sgt. J. C. Williams, of Wellington.
