Penetrations After Tying, 14-14

Tigers Meet Klein Next Saturday

By JIM HARDIN News Sports Writer

NACOGDOCHES - Georgetown came to Nacogdoches Saturday night with an upset in mind and the Eagles nearly did just that.

The Eagles battled Lufkin Dunbar to a 14-14 tie in Memorial Stadium, but the Tigers had a 5-2 edge on penetrations to earn the right to meet Klein in the state seti-finals game this coming weeknd.

Dunbar will play Klein in Conroe Saturday night. Game time is 8 p.m. Klein beat Hondo, 3514, Friday.

The Tigers trailed 7-6 at halftime and 14-6 at the end of the third quarter, but the determinede Dunbar crew exploded in the final period to knot the score.

Fullback Kenneth Williams was once again the big gun for Dunbar as he rompeed for 150 yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. Halfback Jesse Ward also did his share and much more as he scampered for 120 yards on 20 carries.

Halfback Billy Ray Campbell was the leader charger for the Eagles as he rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries. Fullback Ike Housenfluke carried 13 times for 50 yards.

The Tigers completely dominated in the statistics, racking up 22 first downs compared to only six for the Eagles. Dunbar rusheed for 277 yards while Georgetown was allowed 137.

Dunbar tallied first on a 42yard pass from quarterback D. C. Nobles to end Michael Freeman. The Tiger end was covered by two Eagle defenders, but he pulled in the pass on the fiveyard-line and raced the remaining distance to the goal.

Nobles, the holder for the extra point attmept, fumbled the snap from center to keep Dunbar from getting its seventh point.

The scoring play came with 2:43 left in the first quarter.

The Eagles got their first scoring opportunity on a punt return fumble early in the second quarter. Ward fumbled the ball and Georgetown recovered on Dunbar's 28-yard-line. From there, it took the Eagles six plays to score.

Housefluke carried over for the score fro one yard out. Larry Moore booted the extra point and with 11:04 left in the second quarter Georgetown had a 7-6 lead.

The reminder of the quarter, both teams failed to score and the Eagles held a one point lead at intermission.

End Mike Burson gave Georgetown a scoring chance in the third quarter as he partially blocked a Nobles punt.

The punt went a total of two yards and the Eagles found themselves in excellent field position on the Dunbar 18-yardline

Housenfluke ran for a twoyard gainer, then quarterback Moore dashed the remaining 16 yards for the score.

Moore dropped back to pass, but saw his recivers covered and decided to run. Moore also kicked the PAT and Georgetown now led 14-6 with 9:11 left in the third quarter.

Dunbar, paced by the running of Williams and Ward, came back to score in the fourth quarter.

Williams came through with the touchdown on a 19-yard run with 9:56 left in the game. Ward blasted off tackle for the twopoint conversion to tie the score at 14-all.

Many Records Broken

The 1969 Diboll Lumberjacks set a number of new records in the DHS football book, the most noteworthy being that fine 8-2 record.

Coach Joe Wyatt's Lumberjacks actually bested the 1966 record of 6-3-1 last week when they ran their record to 7-2. The victory over Corrigan left them with an 8-2 slate, which is an excellent mark for a team in a district with two powers like Lufkin Dunbar and Crokett -- the only teams which beat the Jacks.

A number of records were shattered. Here is a list of the major ones:

1. Most consecutive wins in a single season, four.

2. Most consecutive wine at home, five.

3. Most consecutive wins, six, 1968-69.

4. Most consecutive home wins, six, 1968-69.

5. Most points scored in single season, 348.

6. Most points scored in single season, 74.

7. Best total offense, 3,436 yards.

8. Most points scored in one quarter, 30.

9. Most points scored in one half, 58.

10. Most consecutive games played without being shut out, 20 straight games, from 196769.

11. Best coaching record for any given period of time, Joe Wyatt, 17 wins, 12 losses in three seasons.

There probably are other records that have been overlooked among the other accomplishments of this fine team.

Incomplete records from so many previous years makes it difficult to pin down new records, however.

For instance, there have been few long runs from scrimmage against the Jacks this season, very few 'bombs' thrown over the defensive secondary, and nobody ran a punt or kickoff back for a touchdown on the Jacks

The 1969 squad is the second best defensive unit ever. They allowed but 85 points against them the entire season, and that is second only to the 1966 team which allowed but 81.

4-18 in District 22-AA Battle Powerful Dunbar Bombards Rusk

By JIM HARDIN Lufkin News Writer RUSK - Lufkin Dunbar went 14 minutes without running a play from scrimmage during the second half here Firday night, but still had little trouble in downing the Rusk Eagles 4418.

"That's got to be some kind of record for us," Elmer Redd, Dunbar head choach said following the game. "Fourteen minutes, that's a long time without running an offensive play."

The Eagles accomplished this possible record-breaking feat by succeeding on two on-side kicking attempts.

Rusk took the opening kickoff in the second half and marched 56 yards for a touchdown. On the following kickoff, the Ealges rushed down and recovered the short kick and again drove for a touchdown.

The second on-side kick again enabled the Eagles to get the ball. The short kick was taken by Dunbar lineman Elbert Brown, but he fumbled and Don Emerson recovered for Rusk. At this point, it looked as if the Eagles would drive for another score, but Dunbar defensive back Michael Freeman intercepted a Rusk pass on the Tiger six yard line.

The Tigers finally ran their first offensive play from scrimmage in the second half with 10 minutes left in the game.

Even though the Tigers had their troubles during the last two quarters, they struck early and often during the first two periods to build up a 30-6 lead by halftime.

Fullback Clifford Davis, replacement for all-state fullback Kenneth Williams who was injured in the game against Turner High, scored first for the Tigers on a four-yard run, This tally came with 8:38 left in the first quarter, on Dunbars' first possession of the game. Timothy Hale kicked his first of five extra points.

Homer Freeman had given Dunbar good field position by taking opening kickoff and returning it to the Tiger 45 yard stripe before being shoved out of bounds. From there, the Tigers drove to the Rusk four yard line before being faced with a fourth down and three situation. Davis got the call and rammed offtackle for the score.

After the following kickoff, Rusk fumbled on its first play from scrimmage. A dunbar lineman fell on the loose ball, giving the Tigers good scoring postion on the Eagle 28 yard line.

Dunbar drove down to the Rusk 10 yard line before the Eagle defense dug in. Again faced with a fourth down situation, this time on the 10 yard stripe, the Tigers chose to go for a field goal, giving Dunbar a 10-0 lead.

Rusk got into the scoring act with 24 seconds left in the first quarter with tailback Don Matthews plunging over from the one. The PAT kick was blocked by Dunbar's Freeman.

Leading by only four points, the Dunar offense produced another scoring march following the Rusk tally. Halfback Jesse Ward climaxed the 45-yard Tiger drive as he plunged one yard for the score.

Quarterback D. C. Nobles tossed a 39-yard pass to Freeman for the next Tiger points. This score came with 5:24 left in the second quarter.

Sparked by the passing combinations of Nobles to Freeman and Ward, the Tigers drove 64 yards for the next tally. Nobles put the finishing touches on the march as he circled right end for two yards and the score.

On this drive, Nobles tossed a 17 yard pass to Freeman and a 25 yarder to Ward.

The Tigers had built up a 306 lead at halftime before the Rusk rampage began in the third quarter.

Rusk scored on its first possession in the second half as halfback Emerson drove from the one. The pass failed for the extra points.

Matthews scored next for Rusk as he also rammed over f rom the one. The kick failed, bu the Eagles had cut the Dunbar lead to 12 points.

When Dunbar finally got its hands on the ball in the second half, the Tigers drive 66 yards in only three plays for a score.

On the first play from scrimmage, Ward broke loose for a 47-yard gainer to advance the ball to the Rusk 16. Ward carried again for three yards before Nobles circled right end for 13 yards and a Dunbar score.

Davis scored the final Dunbar touchdown on a four-yard run with 32 seconds left in the game. This 60-yard scoring drive was sparked by a 21-yard run by Ward and a 38 yarder by halfback Roy Lomax.

Ward was leading ground gainer for Dunbar with 190 yards on 14 carries as the Tigers raced to their ninth straight season win.
