HISTORY
OF TODAY

This month has been Black History month in Lufkin as well as the
nation. Within our schools there has been emphasis on the role and
contributions made by prominent blacks in our society. Earlier this
month many Lufkin and area businesspeople sponsored a page of
questions in this newspaper about such influential and well-known
black figures as Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesse Jackson and Barbara
Jordan. We all can be rightfully proud of their achievements.

Today we would like to recognize and highlight for you the names
and achievements of many of our own area's prominent black leaders.
