Gene Jackson
U.S. Air Force Lt. Col.
Gene Jackson who died in
a training exercise while
flying his F-15, was an
accomplished leader
named to the Outstanding
Young Men by the
American Jaycees.

Gene was a great example
to others growing up and
attending Lufkin schools.
He graduated from Dunbar
High School in 1962. Said
former Dunbar principal
M.E. Lyons, "Gene was on
my judging team in F.F.A.
and he was an outstanding
student. I'd tell him what
to do and he'd do it."

When he died, Gene was
doing exactly what he
loved - flying a jet air-
plane. Since the age of nine
Gene wanted to fly. And
despite kidding from his
schoolmates, Gene
realized that ambition. He
flew more than 600
missions over Vietnam
and had logged almost
1,000 hours of combat
time.

In all, Gene was awarded
28 air medals, three
Meritorious Service
medals, the Vietnam
Gallantry Medal with Palm,
the National Service Medal
and four Distinguished
Flying Crosses.

Former U.S. Air Force air
traffic controller Jackie
Jackson is making plans to
return to Lufkin soon.

Jackie, an honor graduate
of Dunbar and the
University of Houston (B.A.)
will be coming back to
Lufkin employed as a with
the U.S. Postal Service. He
formerly was a Commercial
Accounts Representative
for the postal service in
Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

He began his career with
the post office as a letter
carrier and then was
selected as an instructor of
the newly developed
Carrier Academy before
being appointed as
Commercial Accounts
Representative in
Louisiana.

Jackson and his wife,
Beverly, have two children,
Marcus and Jasmie.

Carl Jackson
Carl Jackson graduated
from Poly High School in
Riverside, California. After
returning to Lufkin he
became employed at
Lufkin Industries. He and
his wife, Hazel, live in
Lufkin.

Terri Shepherd
"Adopted" son Terri
graduated from Dunbar
High School. Employed by
the City of Lufkin Terri and
his wife Laura live in
Lufkin. Laura is employed
at Sears. They have two
children: Lauren Lee and
Terry Lee.
