The State of Texas,
Newton County } Know all men by these presents that I,
J. A. Leonard of the state and county aforesaid, for and in
consideration of the sum of three thousand dollars paid to me in
hand by Thomas Leonard, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged,
have bargained, sold and delivered and do by these presents grant
and convey unto the said Thomas Leonard, his heirs and assigns all
of my right, title and claim to four slaves. This being my portion
of the negroes from my father's estate and still undivided.
The said Thomas Leonard to have and to hold said slaves forever
or during their natural life. And furthermore warrant said
slaves to be sound in mind and body. And will forever
warrant and defend the right and title in said slaves
unto the said Thomas Leonard, his heirs and assigns against
all persons whomsoever this May 15th, 1860.

County of Newton } Before me, the undersigned authority,
personally appeared J. A. Leonard, whose genuine signature
appears to the within bill of sale, and acknowledged that
he signed the same for the considerations and purposes therein
written. In testimony whereof, I hereto sign my name
and impress the seal of the County Court
this, the 15th day of May A. D. 1860.
