Know all men by these presents
that I, Walter L. Campbell of this city, for and in
consideration of the sum of thirty-one hundred dollars
to me in hand paid by Hugh T. Mitchell of Newton County, Texas,
the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge, do bargain, sell,
convey, transfer, and deliver unto the said Hugh P. Mitchell
the following negroes, to wit, Henry Bronson and Charles
Smith at $1050 each [and] Tess Boxer at $1000.
All of said negroes I warrant to be sound in mind and
body and free from all the maladies prescribed by the
laws of Louisiana.
To have and to hold the above-named slaves
unto the said Hugh P. Mitchell, his heirs, executors,
administrators, and assigns to him and their proper use
and benefit forever. And I, the said Walter L.
Campbell, do bind myself, my heirs, executors, or administrators
to protect and defend said property from all claim
or claims whatever.
Dated at New Orleans the 12th day of February
eighteen hundred and fifty-five.

The State of Texas,
County of Newton } Before me, John Moore, Clerk of the
County Court of the county aforesaid, personally appeared
W. A. Mitchell, one of the subscribing witnesses to the within
bill of sale and to me well-known, and after being
duly sworn by me, says on oath that Walter L. Campbell,
the assignee of said bill of sale, signed the same in his
presence, and acknowledged his signature thereto for the
considerations and purposes therein expressed, and that
he, at the request of said Campbell, signed the same
as a witness. To certify which, I hereto sign
my name and affix the seal of
my office this, the 5th day of
March A. D. 1855.
