The State of Texas,
County of Newton } Know all men by these presents
that I, George Dougharty, for and in consideration of
the sum of twelve hundred dollars to me in hand paid
by W. H. J. Holmes, I have and do hereby sell and convey
to the said W. H. J. Holmes a certain negro man
of yellow complexion named Gibson, about 27 years of
age. Which said negro man I warrant to be sound
in body and mind and to be a slave for life.
Given under my hand and seal this 9th day of
December 1854.

County of Newton } Before me, John Moore, Clerk of
the County Court of Newton County, personally appeared
George Dougharty, whose signature appears to the above
instrument of writing, bearing date December the 9th,
1854, and to me well-known, and acknowledged his
signature to the same to be his act and deed for the
consideration and purposes therein stated. To certify
which, I hereto sign my name and
affix the seal of my office this, the
9th day of December A. D. 1854.
