The State of Texas,
County of Newton } Know all men by these presents
that I, James F. Trotti, a citizen of
Newton County, for and in consideration of the love and
affection I have for my children John L. Trotti, Caroline
Elizabeth Wilson, Harriet Ann Horger, James H. Trotti,
Julia A. Trotti, and Joshua T. Trotti, and for and in
consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars in cash
to me in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged,
and being desirous of making suitable provisions
for my said children now and after my death, I do
hereby grant, bargain, sell, and convey and by these
presents do hereby give, grant, bargain, alien, sell, and
convey unto the said John L., Caroline, Elizabeth, Harriet,
Ann, James H., Julia A., and Joshua F., and their heirs
and assigns forever, Clarissa, a negro woman aged
about sixty years; Griffin, a negro man aged about
fifty; Toney, a negro man aged about thirty-seven,
years; Frank, a negro man aged about thirty-four
years; Tamer, the wife of Toney, aged about thirty-five
years; Fanny, a negro woman aged about
forty years; Martha, a negro child aged about two years;
Nelly, a negro girl aged about seven or eight years;
Mathew, a negro boy aged about six months old; Ned,
a negro boy aged about four years; Jefferson, a
negro boy aged about one year; [and] Robert, a negro
boy aged about seven years, together with their
future increase. To have and to hold the said slaves
to the said children and grantees, their heirs
and assigns forever. Provided nevertheless, that
I, the said James F. Trotti, shall have and retain the
sole use, benefit and control, and possession of the
aforementioned slaves herein conveyed. The purpose and object
of this instrument being to retain a life estate in
said slaves and their increase with remainder
over at my death to my said children. And
it is further provided in this deed that this
