The State of Texas,
County of Newton } Know all men by these presents that
on the 11th day of April A. D. 1842, I, Friend McMahon Sr.,
sold and conveyed by bill of sale to my son Friend
McMahon Jr. a certain negro man named Silas for the
consideration therein expressed, and that said negro slave Silas
has been rightfully the property of my said son Friend McMahon
since the date of said bill of sale by purchase and possession.
Which right and title I still ratify, warrant and defend.
And whereas, for and in consideration of the services that said
negro Silas has rendered to me and my beloved wife Margaret
McMahon by way of labor done and performed at different
times through the kindness and affection of our son, the
said Friend McMahon, as well as for the further service
and favors rendered us by our said son Friend McMahon,
we, the said Friend McMahon Sr. and Margaret McMahon,
do hereby [and] still ratify and make good by our warranty the
right and title of said negro man Silas to our said son
Friend McMahon Jr. [We] also give and grant unto him, the
said Friend McMahon Jr., fifty acres of land. Said land
to be a square of fifty acres taken out of the Northeast
corner of the headright league of John Miller. All of
which we hereby warrant and defend to our said son Friend
McMahon Jr. against all and any other person whomsoever.

State of Texas,
County of Newton } Be it known that this, the 2nd day
of December A. D. 1853, personally came Friend McMahon Sr.
and Margaret McMahon, his wife, before me, J. S. Irwin, an
acting Notary Public in and for the County of Newton. The
said Friend McMahaon acknowledged his signature to the above
and foregoing instrument of writing to be his voluntary act and
deed for the uses and purposes therein expressed. And the Margaret
McMahon, wife of Friend McMahon Sr., being examined by me
separate and apart from her husband, [and] after having the foregoing explained,
says she signed the above of her own free will for the uses and
purposes therein set forth. Given under my hand and seal
this, the day and date above written.
