Newton County } Know all me by these presents that I,
Martha Clark of the state and county
aforsaid, do by these presents bargan, sell and deliver unto
S. G. Lucius of the State of Louisiana and the Parish of Sabine
a negro boy named Thomas, aged about eleven years, for an[d]
in consideration to me in hand paid by the said S. G. Lucius,
the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, for the said in
consideration of six hundred dollars paid by the said S. G. Lucius.
And I, Martha Clark of the said State of Texas and County
of Newton, do warrant and forever defend the said right
and title of said boy Tom, as well as the health and soundness
of the same, and against the claim of myself, my heirs,
executors, [and] administrators and [for] the sole use and behoof of the
aforesaid S. G. Lucius, his heirs, executors, and administrators.
And for him to have and to hold the said boy Tom, and against
all and every other claim or claims whatsoever. And the said
Martha Clark do[es] hereby agree to ratify and confirm all
and singular whatsoever may be conserving the premises,
and the said boy Tom warranted a slave for life,
to the aforesaid S. G. Lucius. In testimony whereof, I the
said Martha Clark, have hereunto set my hand and affixed
my seal, using a scrawl for a seal. Signed, sealed and delivered
in presence of [blank] this 16th day of February A. D. one
thousand eight hundred and fifty-three.

County of Newton } Before me, John Moore, County
Clerk in and for the County of Newton,
personally appeared Robert Joyner, one of the suscribing
witnesses to the annexed bill of sale, bearing date February
the 16th, A. D. 1853, and after being duly sworn by me, said
on his oath that he saw Martha Clark sign the same
and acknowledged her signature for the considerations
therein expressed.
