The State of Texas,
County of Newton } Know all men by these presents that I,
John Manning of the County of Newton and State of Texas,
for and in consideration of the sum of nine hundred
dollars to me in hand paid, the receipt of witch is hereby
acknowledged, have bargained and sold and by these presents
do bargan and sell to Willis Faircloth of the County
of Sabine and state aforesaid a negro woman named
Lelia, aged about fourteen years. To have and to hold
the same unto the said Willie Faircloth, his heirs
and assigns forever. And I furthermore warrant said
negro woman to be sound, sensible and healthy to the
best of my knowledge and belief. In testimony
whereof, I have hereunto signed my name and affixed
my seal, using a scrawl for a seal, this fifth day
of January in the year our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and fifty-three.

County of Newton } Before me, Matthew W. Burke,
a Notary Public duly commissioned and sworn in and
for said county, came John Manning, personally known
to me, whose name is signed to a certain instument of
writing bearing date January 5th A. D. 1853 and hereunto
annexed, and acknowledged his signature to the same
for the uses, purposes and consideration therein
exoressed. In testimony whereof, I hereunto sign
my name and affix my seal of office
