Lewis, Chief Justice of the County aforesaid, do hereby certify that Elizabeth Nettles, the wife of James Nettles, parties to a certain deed bearing date on the ninth day of November eighteen hundred and forty-four and ehreunto annexed, personally appeared before me, the [Chief] Justice of the county aforesaid, and having been examined by [me privily] and apart from her husband, and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her, she, the said Elizabeth Nettles, acknowledged [the] same to be her act and deed, and declared that she had willingly signed, sealed and described the same, and that she wished not to retract it. The Republic of Texas, County of Jefferson } Know all men by these presents that I, Larkin R. Thomas of the county and republic aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred and forty-four 82/100 dollars to me in hand paid by Henry Moss of the State of Louisiana and one of the United States of the North, have this day bargained, sold and conveyed unto the said Henry Moss aforesaid a certain male slave named Bob, aged about twenty-four years. Which said slave I warrant to be a
