The Republic of Texas, County of Jefferson } Know all men by these presents that I, Malcom S. McAlpin, in consideration of eight hundred dollars to me paid at and before the making of this instrument in the manner following, to wit, the liquidation of a certain mortgage, bearing date March 23rd, 1840 and recorded in the Clerk's office of the aforesaid county in Book E, pages 157 and 158, on the 11th May 1844, as well as the liquidation of certain other notes and accounts, amounting in all to the aforesaid sum of eight hundred dollars by John Harmon of the aforesaid county and republic, [hath] this day bargained, sold and delivered to the said John Harmon, [his] heirs and assigns a certain negro slave, aged about thirty-five years, of the name of Hanibal. Which said slave I warrant to be sound and healthy, and free from all incumbrances, and a slave for life. And I, the said Malcom S. McAlfin, for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators, do warrant and covenant and agree to warrant and forever defend the title to said slave Hanibal unto the said John Harmon, his heirs and assigns against every person or persons lawfully claiming or to claim said slaves or any interest therein whatsoever. In witness, I have hereto set my hand and scroll by way of seal this twenty-eighth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-four. In presence of [blank]. Malcom S. The Republic of Texas, County of Jefferson } Know all men by these presents that we, James Nettles and Elizabeth Nettles, wife of the said James Nettles, both of the County of Jefferson and Republic of Texas, for and in consideration of the sum of three thousand six hundred dollars to us in hand paid by Timothy Rowley of said county and republic, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have this ninth day of November A.
