Republic of Texas, County of Jefferson } Know all men by these presents that I, Joel Langham of the county and republic aforesaid, in consideration of the sum of eight hundred dollars to him in hand paid, have this day bargained and sold to James Drake of the county and republic aforesaid a certain negro woman, aged about eighteen years, named Julia. Which said negro I warrant sound, healthy and a slave f[or] life, and free from all incumbrance. In witness whereof, I have hereto set my hand and scroll by way of seal this 6th day of February 1843. The Republic of Texas, County of Jefferson } Personally appeared before the undersigned authority Joel Langham and signed, sealed and delivered the foregoing bill of sale in my presence, and acknowledged the same to be his voluntary act and deed for the considerations therein named. {Seal} Given under my hand and scroll for the want of a seal of office, February 6th, 1843. I hereby certify the foregoing to be a true copy of the original bill of sale from Joel Langham to James Drake of a certain negro girl, dated February 6th, 1843, and recorded in my office for record on the 6th day of February 1843. The Republic of Texas, County of Jefferson } Be it remembered that on the first day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-two, [and] in pursuance of an order from the Honorable, the Probate Court in and for the County of Jefferson and the Republic of Texas, and in accordance with law in such cases made and provided, there was exposed to public sale by the administrators of the estate of Joseph Grigsby, deceased, viz., Sally M. Grigsby and George W. Smyth, the following property, to wit, one certain negro man named Litton, aged about thirty-one years. And William D. Smith of the county and republic aforesaid then and there became the purchaser of the said slave Litton as aforesaid, he being the highest and best bidder for the sum of eight hundred dollars, payable twelve months from date. In consideration of the aforesaid sum of eight hundred dollars secured to the satisfaction of the said Sally M. Grigsby and George W. Smyth, administrators of the aforesaid estate, at the expiration of twelve months from the date hereof, have granted, bargained, sold, and released and by these present do grant, bargain, sell, and deliver unto the said William D. Smith all the rights, title, interest, and claim that the said Joseph Grigsby had in and to the said slave Litton at the time of his, the said Joseph Grigsby, decease. To have and to hold the said slave Litton as abovementioned unto the said William D. Smith, his heirs and assigns forever. And we, the said administrators as aforesaid, do warrant the said boy to be a slave for life. And we do hereby bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said boy Litton unto the said William D. Smith, his heirs and assigns against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same in any way under or through the said Joseph Grigsby, deceased. In testimony whereof, we ahve hereto set our hands and scrolls by way of seal the day and date above-written. (Test.) Enoch Grigsby, William Grigsby. Sally M. Grigsby, administratrix {Seal}. Grigsby of the county afore[said], we, Enoch Grigsby and William Grigsby, have bargained, sold and c[onve]yed unto the said Sally M. Grigsby and her heirs forever a certain negro [girl], Jane, about six years old, a slave for life, with the same assurances of title as we, the said Enoch and William, have received from the administrators [of] the estate of Joseph Grigsby, deceased. And we, the said Enoch and William Grigsby, [have] ourselves to warrant and defend the title to said girl Jane against ourselves and our heirs and against all persons claiming by, through or under us. In witness whereof, we have hereto subscribed our names and affixed our scrolls by way of seals this twenty-eighth day of November A. D. one thousand eight hundred and forty-two. Test., G. W.
