I have often mentioned the steam engine as necessary to do away with the [ca???e] mill but I am still inclined for delay to see if we can grow or make sugar for a profit - at present that is doubtfull unless our wages are reduced and then we may fall in with one from some less favoured Estate than Chiswick that will be abandoned
I reside about Forty two miles from Chiswick and usually go there once a month in the dry seasons and when I can in the wet as it is not pleasant or even general to the health to be too much exposed in the sickly season - There is an operative manager on the same as your Farm Bailiffs with two [assistants?] constantly on the property whose business is to superintend and carry my directions [gap] effect
You ask my opinion of the Colonial Bank and candidly I will say it is an Establishment that must do well if the Colony does and they can get the Government to alter that part of the Charter which obliges them to redeem any notes they issue in Silver dollars which being a coin current in all the world even with the Chinese they bear a premium that prevents their issue and of course so much profit as they otherwise would - I shall feel great pleasure in shewing your friend Mr Cayite any civility and attention in my power and with best wishes
I remain Dear Sir Yours faithfully J Townson
The Last of the Crop from Chiswick is just shipped to Mess Stewart [& Westmorland?] per the Countess of Dusk am 20 Hhds & 12 [PM?]
