Transcription Conventions
A full list of transcription conventions, as well as common abbreviations, special characters, and useful shortcuts, can be accessed on Folgerpedia. If you are not comfortable using tags, just do your best! We will work on this during the peer-review stage!.
- Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization: Use original spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
- Recipe titles and other headings: Write the title of each recipe exactly as it appears. Highlight the title with your cursor and select the "[head]" button at the trop of the transcription window. If your recipe is numbered by the original author, be sure to include the number and tag it as a heading. Add an extra line break before and after each heading.
- Superscript letters are silently lowered. If you see the letter y with the superscript letter r, you should silently lower the r when transcribing.
- Abbreviations should be expanded, except for forms of address like Mr. and Mrs. and symbols for money. As with the above example, you would want to transcribe "your" instead of "yr," supplying the missing "ou." You should mark these supplied or expanded letters by highlighting them with your cursor and hitting the "[expan]" button at the top of the transcription window.
- Common abbreviations: wth=with, wch=which, ye=the, yt=that.
- Words inserted above or between the lines remain superscript. Once you have transcribed the superscript letters or words, highlight the superscript text with your cursor and select the "[sup]" button at the top of the transcription window.
- Cancelled or crossed out words should be transcribed but struck through. Highlight the crossed-out text and select the "[del]" button.
- Indecipherable (unclear) or destroyed (gap) words appear in square brackets with dots representing the number of letters thought to be missing [le...rs]. Select the dots or periods you entered and select the "[unclear]" or "[gap]" button.
- Blank pages: If the page is truly blank, check the "Mark as blank" checkbox above the transcription window, save, and move on.
- Line Breaks: Hit return once after each line ends. Two returns indicate a new entry/paragraph break. If a word breaks across a line, place the hyphen, equal sign, or other word splitting character in a soft break tag:
<lb break="no"></lb>
"Autolink" will suggest subjects certain words could be linked to or you can use double braces to link subjects. [[Jane Doe]]
will link the text "Jane Doe" to the subject Jane Doe, while [[Jane Doe|Jane]]
will link the text "Jane" to the subject Jane Doe. We recommend that linking be left to an editor after the initial transcription is made.
