Dear friend

We are in good circumstances as to our health buisness and &c but our country is suffering the ravages of war. the indians have desolated the frontiers by massacaring the inhabitants and our country men have taken up their arms and marched [against] the savages. a body of men under capt Stedman was attacted at a considerable distance from the main army, by a body of indians about dusk. the whites retreated after having 11 killed including one of the officers we do not know how many indians, 5000 more soldiers have just marched out with the intention of making a treaty on their own terms or destroying the whole tribe which is the fox indians. our country is not in so prosperous a state as it has been but is still the Eden which it has been

Dear Aunt I received your letter dated Aprile the 29th from which I was pleasd to learn that you and all my friends in Logan were well But was sorry to hear that you and aunt Mary was displeased with your Change of residence But I am in hopes that time and further aquaintence will reconcile you to the country I was verry sorry to learn that you and Aunt Mary was so far deprived of Christian privileges as to have no Church of your order with which to meet in social worship but it is also to be hoped that time will obviate this difficulty, It appears from your letter that their has bin some misunder standing with regard to my religious friends you state that some says that I am of Campbellite Baptiste and some says that I am A member of the Christian Church I do not Clame the name of Campbell ite I consider it a reproche to any religious society to take upon them selves the name of any man I believe that Christian or desciple of Christ is name enough for any Christian altho I concur with Mr Campbell in his friends on Christian faith Reformation Baptism the operation of the spirrite and call to the ministry and many other things, yet I do not chose to be cauld by his name I consider party names party creeds confessions of faith and disciplants amongst the gratest evils that prevade the Christian world [gap] dose some metifician form a creede or confssion

to see you, a short time before, and that you were very well, I was glad to hear this much. Newton, Stephen and Aunt Sallie Dawson paid us a visit not long since, which we enjoyed, as only those can, who have been away from home, and friends, as long as we have. They staid a week with us, and were delighted with our school, our Teachers, and with our concert which came off while they were here.

I took them to all the public places in Nashville, and showed them, evrything I thought would interest them. Newton told me that you had paid us a visit, and of that, dark, muddy walk you took up to church one night. I know that you all enjoyed Brother Hayes's meeting, he is such a good man
